Age and Growth Rhythm of Tree Species Natural From Pantanal Matogrossense, MS PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Seitz, Rudi Arno; Salis, Suzana Maria de.
The information on the influence of environmental factors upon growth rate of trees is very important for the development of forestry management programs. The aim of this work was to determine the age and  radial increments of the trees. Samples were collected, in July 1996, in Nhumirim Farm, Embrapa Pantanal, located in Nhecolândia sub-region, Pantanal, Corumbá - Mato Grosso do Sul. The disks from 19 trees species were collected in areas with Arboreous Savanna, Forested Savana and Semi-deciduous Dry Forest. The  trees were selected by good canopy formation. Traversal section samples of the stem were collected of each tree at 0.3 m height, to determinate age and  increment of the first five years of the trees, and at  1,30m height, to evaluate the growth...

Dendroecological potential of Tabebuia heptaphylla (Vell.) Toledo PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patrícia Póvoa de; Seitz, Rudi Arno; Salis, Suzana Maria de.
The use of growth ring information is nowadays increasing in tropical forests. The Pantanal of Nhecolandia, sub-region of Pantanal Mato-grossense may be viewed as one of those regions, as its climatic and soil factors induces annual growth rings development. This study aims at determining the correlation of growth increments by growth ring analysis of Tabebuia heptaphylla, a deciduous tree that occurs naturally in that region. Disks samples of a tree with good canopy development were collected at soil level and at every one meter. The growth rings were counted and measured on eight radii of each disk. Pearson coefficient was used to show the correlation between growth rings and precipitation rates. The age of the tree was estimated as 16 years old. The...

Growth rate of a terra firme rain forest in Brazilian Amazonia over an eight-year period in response to logging Acta Amazonica
Carvalho,João Olegário Pereira de; Silva,José Natalino Macedo; Lopes,José do Carmo Alves.
This paper deals with growth rates of trees > 5cm dbh over an eight-year period from 257 species at the Tapajós National Forest. The discussion is centred on the behaviour of the forest after logging. Permanent sample plots were established in 1981 and measured at the first time. The area was logged in 1982. Measurements after logging occurred in 1983, 1987 and 1989. Considering all species together, diameter increment was similar for both intensities of logging until five years after logging. Light-demanding species showed significantly higher growth rates than shade-tolerant species in the logged forest, with greater increment in the heavier treatment intensity. Commercial species also had higher growth rates in the heavier logged area, although those...
